The festival is named after King David Kalakaua, the last king of the Kingdom of Hawaii who sparked a renewed interest in hula in the late 1800s.Before his reign, the dance was banned by the Christian convert Queen Ka'ahumanu.
Today, the week-long affair gathers many tourists curious about the art form, which the Merrie Monarch has described as "the language of the heart and therefore the heartbeat of the Hawaiian people." Hula is particularly known as a means for the old folk to share myths and legends to the next generation through the hand, foot and hip motions as well as chants, most of which honor the volcano Goddess Pele.
