Following the opening of a new super-library in Hackney, London Estate Agents Stirling Ackroyd give their reaction.
(1888PressRelease) February 02, 2012 - London estate agents Stirling Ackroyd's Hackney office celebrate the opening of one of the UK's largest libraries in the borough. The Dalston CLR James Library had its 'soft launch' this month, ahead of an official launch in February. There are dedicated separate adult and children's areas within the library, alongside 20 quiet study areas, 57 computers, free WiFi and a privately managed café.
The library was named after Afro-Trinidadian historian Cyril Lionel Robert James and is twice the size of the previous version the CLR James library which it replaced. The new building is also home to the Hackney archives. For those with a busy lifestyle, the 'quick picks' area contains a wide selection of bestsellers to rapidly pick up and drop off themselves using state of the art 'self-service' machines. For families, the space has been designed to keep young minds busy, with tunnel shaped bookshelves and comfortable floor cushions. Teenagers have also been given their own dedicated separate space and the library is to carry over 1,600 CDs and DVDs. The number of adult's books has been estimated at 17,000; children's books at 7,500; and the total number of items available to the public comes in at well over 32,000. The Hackney Archives include more than 20,000 historic photographs, plus records dating back to the 1300s. The project went ahead as planned at an estimated investment of £4.4 million despite the recent cutbacks seen across many other boroughs. Residents in Brent have recently seen multiple community library closures.
"This is typical Hackney, there is a very strong commitment to continually upgrading and improving local facilities of all kinds. Of course there's a huge excitement about the coming Olympic Games, and it's terrific that anyone living here can apply to be a volunteer for them. It's also great to have the underground station now and we've been working with Hackney property for a very long time now and seen this continual drive for development year after year. We wish the new library every success,"
There have also recently been multi-million pound investments in sports and leisure facilities, including the Hackney Marshes football grounds and Hackney Downs basketball, tennis courts, and multi-use area complete with new pavilion. Clissold House also recently re-opened following extensively refurbishment, a grade II listed mansion house set in the grounds of Clissold Park.
"It's a very family orientated borough, with a plethora of sports and leisure facilities and a local commitment to education and learning. At the same time, Hackney property is also ideal for young professionals, with high quality studios, one and two bedrooms apartments on the doorstep of the famously vibrant local culture. Then there's the nightlife of Shoreditch and of course we also work directly with Shoreditch property. It's all very close to the city, with the new underground line complementing a dense and frequent network of buses and overground trains," said London estate agents Stirling Ackroyd.
