Local Cyber School Joins Quest to End Hunger
Staff, students, and families contributed canned foods and other non-perishable items from October 1 through October 15, 2010 to benefit Philabundance, the nation's largest hunger relief organization. As a statewide cyber charter school, contributing to the cause required an extra dose of creativity for PA Leadership families.
- (1888PressRelease) October 30, 2010 - In October, the Pennsylvania Leadership Charter School kicked off a school-wide initiative to aid Shire Pharmaceuticals' "The Great Food Fight," the first regional, competitive high school food drive of its kind.
Staff, students, and families contributed canned foods and other non-perishable items from October 1 through October 15, 2010 to benefit Philabundance, the nation's largest hunger relief organization.
LaTisha Griffin, Grade Level Coordinator and sponsor of the food drive, proudly announced the grand total: 6,768.06 lbs collected. This more than doubled school's goal. Of this total, 6,561.6 lbs was collected in the Southeastern region of Pennsylvania, and is therefore eligible in the Great Food Fight competition.
Griffin was elated when she announced the totals to the school, "I want to send a heartfelt thank you to everyone, for participating in the most successful food drive that PALCS has ever held. I never dreamed that we would collect as much as we did. As a team, we can achieve anything."
As a statewide cyber charter school, contributing to the cause required an extra dose of creativity for PA Leadership families. Erin Keefe, School Improvement Coordinator, described, "Until we discover a way to send canned goods via cyber space, food drive initiatives require extra work for our students. I am overwhelmed by the dedication and generosity of our families and faculty. Every day, I'm excited to come to work because of who we are as a school." PA Leadership is one of 20 participating schools throughout Southeastern Pennsylvania.
