Adelphi University's Department of Theatre presents the original drama Living Newspaper. The Federal Theatre Project (FTP) was the largest theatrical organization in the history of the world with productions seen by one quarter of the entire American population during the time of the Great Depression. Directed by its author, the Department of Theatre's Dr. Brian Rose, the play, using the format of the FTP's unique and signature style, tells the story of the FTP and the desperate fight of director Hallie Flanagan to save this powerful theatrical voice as it was threatened by the House Un-American Activities Committee with defunding for asking too many inconvenient questions. Living Newspaper was crafted to ask why the inconvenient issues posed by the FTP remain unsolved after over sixty years and why America has never had a federally or state funded theatre since.
