Live 4 Fashion with Brooklyn Fashion Weekend & the MTV Staying Alive Foundation
Fashion show & silent auction hosted at Brooklyn's Industry City to support African youths who are educating their peers on HIV awareness and making a difference.
- New York, NY (1888PressRelease) September 21, 2011 - On Friday, September 30th, Brooklyn Fashion Weekend (BKFW) will partner with the MTV Staying Alive Foundation (SAF) to celebrate an evening of fashion, music, culture and community at Industry City, the burgeoning creative hub and event space located at 220 36th Street in Brooklyn's Sunset Park neighborhood.
Continuing its work in supporting aspiring designers around the globe, BKFW will present "Coming to America", a fashion show featuring the Spring/Summer 2012 collections of visiting African born designers, including Washington Roberts (Nigeria), Raif Atelier (Togo) and Felix Anaman (Ghana). The evening will conclude with the Live 4 Fashion Benefit, an after party and silent auction of art and fashion pieces - the proceeds of which will support SAF's HIV/AIDS awareness campaign in Africa.
BKFW Founder Rick Davy says, "As we enter into our 5th year anniversary we are honored to partner with the MTV Staying Alive Foundation for such an important cause."
Georgia Arnold, Executive Director of the MTV Staying Alive Foundation, says, "The mission of SAF is to empower and educate young people engaged in fighting the stigma, spread and threat of the HIV epidemic. Thanks to BKFW and the incredible artists and fashion designers participating in the event, we'll be able to further support our initiatives in Africa and help our grantees there continue their projects."
According to UNAIDS, 22.5 million people are living with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa and 80% of the 2,500 daily new infections among young people aged 15 - 24 occur in sub-Saharan Africa. SAF has grantees all over the world; four of the SAF grantees in Africa include:
LIYONEBE (Malawi)- Liwonde Youth Network for Basic Education has reached over 2,000 people by educating the youth on HIV through sporting events and entertainment.
Youth Are Talking (Lagos, Nigeria) - A relaxed radio show founded by two youths to educate on HIV prevention. YAT is broadcasted in 16 states across Nigeria.
REPACTED (Kenya) - A youth-led organization has reached over 6,000 people and distributed over 15,000 condoms through theatre and street dance performances.
LeND (Nigeria)- Founded by two inspirational youths to help the deaf population learn about sex education; have reached 15,000 youths, distributed 60,000 condoms and trained 300 young peer educators.
