Liberia Awarded Ambassadorial Patron of London Notting Hill Carnival
For the first time in the history of London Notting Hill Carnival, Europe's Largest annual festive, Liberia debuts and is also awarded the 2016 Ambassadorial Patron.
- (1888PressRelease) August 13, 2016 - Liberia Awarded Ambassadorial Patron of London Notting Hill Carnival Republic of Liberia celebrated and awarded during 50th anniversary of London Carnival.
London, England - This summer The Republic of Liberia will debut during the Jubilee Anniversary of the London Notting Hill Carnival, Europe's largest annual carnival which fills West London with vibrant colors and music bringing exquisite cultural food and dance to spectators that line the streets. Liberia will not only be represented for the first time in carnival history but will also receive this year's Ambassadorial Patron Award, facilitating relationships with LNHCET and Liberia's cultural, tourism and trade industries. An honor for Liberia, a country diligently rebuilding herself after years on civil turmoil.
The status of Ambassadorial Patron is one of The London Notting Hill Carnival Enterprises Trust's (LNHCET) Development and Sustainability program which is now in its fourth year. The previous patrons were the High Commissioner of Trinidad and Tobago in 2013, the Acting High Commissioner of Barbados in 2014 and the High Commissioner of St. Lucia in 2015. The program is designed to employ carnival as a cultural diplomatic tool which enables LNHCET to build effective relationships nationally and internationally.
Liberia will not only be celebrated during the Notting Hill Carnival, but also through the Visit Liberia Festival. Hosted by the Boweh Foundation in partnership with BOSS Global Inc., The Visit Liberia Festival is an art exhibition which is part of a campaign that will launch in London, this Summer and make its next stop in Liberia, West Africa, November 2016. The first of its kind, the festival celebrates Liberian arts and culture, while recognizing those in the African Diaspora.
Artists whose work will be displayed include Leslie Lumeh, a self-taught professional who has made remarkable strides both locally and internationally over the 23-year span of his career as an artist, illustrator, cartoonist and teacher, with many brilliant art projects to his credit. As well as Liberian-born, German- raised artist Sarah Güsten-Marr. Güsten-Marr, is an extensive world traveler who believes that, "travelling is finding." Güsten-Marr's style is characterized by her use of bold coloring and expressive brushstrokes creating works that evoke an intense emotional response from the viewer.
The Boweh Foundation was founded by Jerry Boweh, who was born in Liberia, West Africa and currently resides in Scotland. Boweh has a BA in Youth and Community Development and a MA in Peace and Conflict Resolution. Boweh possesses a strong desire to contribute to communities, schools and society with the intention of promoting social and cultural integration and tolerance, especially amongst those of younger generations. Boweh is the Founder of African Youth Development Action Project (AYDAP), an international charity registered in the UK and operates in Africa, mainly Liberia.
Boweh has over 15 years of music and community experience and is currently the Director of Music and Training at Africa House. His creativity and innovative profile is illustrated through his work in the following roles and positions held: Founder and Director, LIFT-Liberia Social Enterprise promoting Identity, Community Cohesion and Celebration, Founder and Director of African Youth Development Action Project AYDAP, Founder and Musical Director, Glasgow Gospel Choir, and Founder/ Writer for ZUBA Band- Winners of the 2006 JPF Music Award for Best African Album of the Year.
