Retiring Volleyball Coach Imparts Life Lessons Useful On The Court And In Business.

Business and community tend to go hand in hand and sometimes lessons learned on the playing field become the cornerstones of success in the business world. Michael Karu tied the two together, when 15 years ago, while dropping off an item for his daughter, he stretched out his hand to the then head volleyball coach, Melinda Udell. Seeing she needed assistance, Karu volunteered to come on board as an assistant coach. Two seasons later, he was promoted to Head Coach for the girls' varsity volleyball team. "If everybody doesn't work together, you lose" said Karu, who embodies both the business and coaching realms. Karu emphasizes team work, sportsmanship and work ethic both on and off the court. As he often states whether as a coach or business leader, "Sometimes a small conversation can make a difference….a player or an employee cannot help but learn the importance of being part of something bigger than oneself."
