  • (1888PressRelease) November 15, 2011 - ILEX members will now have the title Chartered Legal Executives, which industry experts believe will give executives greater recognition both in the profession and to the public.

Charters, granted on the advice of the Privy Council, have a history dating back to the 13th century but are rarely granted nowadays. New charters are normally reserved for bodies that work in the public interest and which can demonstrate pre-eminence, stability and permanence in their particular field.

Michael Pratt, legal executive at Liverpool law firm Maxwell Hodge said: "This is a major and exciting step forward for ILEX. The granting of a Royal Charter is extremely rare and recognises all the hard work and efforts of legal executives in providing a professional service and valuable legal advice to the public."

Earlier this week, in a speech calling on the legal profession to improve social mobility, Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg highlighted the importance of ILEX in providing "The only route to becoming a qualified lawyer that is open to all."

He said: "It [ILEX] offers a route into the profession - for the 22,000 legal executives, trainee legal executives and paralegals, 85% of them come from families where neither parent went to university; three out of four are women. But at the moment only a minority of posts are filled by this route. So if you are serious about social mobility, it seems to be that a huge part of the solution lies right on your doorstep - or at least back in your offices."

According to Maxwell Hodge the Royal Charter will help in a move towards more social mobility in law firms. Michael said: "Nick Clegg has highlighted the importance of there being more social mobility in the profession and the charter will help us achieve this, establishing the position of Legal Executives as a professional legal career which people can work towards, regardless of education, social status and background."
