Leap Organization Expands Healthy Choices Services - Michelle Barnhart Joins as Clinical Supervisor

  • (1888PressRelease) June 11, 2016 - Clarksville, June 8, 2016 - LEAP Organization announced today that they will continue to expand their services for 700+ youth and young adults who have participated in their counseling, behavioral groups, and career readiness programs by welcoming Michelle Barnhart, the former counselor and alcohol and other drugs prevention outreach coordinator at Austin Peay State University.

    In bringing over 10 years of counseling and substance abuse intervention experience to LEAP Organization, Michelle has facilitated individual and group counseling sessions helping women's depression, addictions, and others in marriage and family settings. She has been responsible for alcohol and drug prevention initiatives on Austin Peay State Universities campus which hosts some 10,000+ students. Her expertise ranges from trauma clients, co-occuring crisis populations, and clients struggling with addictions.

    Prior to joining Leap Organization, Michelle earned her credentials at Trevecca Nazarene University and the University of Tennessee at Martin. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor, Certified Prevention Specialist, and Approved Clinical Supervisor. She maintains her top skills as a member of the International Association of Trauma Professionals.

    Based in Clarksville, Montgomery County, Michelle will help the Healthy Choices Program to diversify its offerings with potential college partnerships, mentorships, intern options for graduate students and undergraduates in Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, or other related majors.

    Executive Director, Richard Garrett said, "The Healthy Choices Program will continue to enhance its therapeutic curriculum to improve our measureable outcomes to have a lasting positive impact on Clarksville." At a time when most cities in Tennessee are struggling with juvenile misbehavior, excessive youth and young adult drug use, and criminal activities in record proportions, LEAP Organization meets the needs of young adults in a positive, productive moral manner. Since 2009, their participants have decrease drug use and illegal activities by more than 75%. Of 700 participants who offended since that time, over 82% did not re-offend. After completing the Career Readiness Program, 120 have obtained employment and 75 have attended post education community colleges and universities.
