Lead in Paint and Coating Materials Now Regulated in South Africa
SGS publishes SafeGuardS on legislation issued in South Africa regulating lead in paint and coating materials.
- (1888PressRelease) October 15, 2024 - SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 144.24 summarizing legislation announced by the South African government to regulate lead in paint and coating materials. A phased implementation begins on May 17, 2025.
Published in the Government Gazette, Regulations Relating to Lead in Paint or Coating Materials, 2024, revises the Hazardous Substances Act, 1973. It contains several important provisions, including:
• Setting a limit value for lead content in paints and similar coating materials
• Mandating a declaration of compliance (DoC) certification for the first production batch or lot of paint or similar coating materials, and in the event of a material change (Annexure A)
• A direction for the use of a non-exhaustive list of international sampling procedures, quality assurance principles and analytical methods (Annexure B)
• Detailing labeling requirements, including the statement ‘Complies with the South African legal lead limit of 90 ppm or less’ and the globally harmonized system of classification and labeling for chemicals
