Law Student and Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia Survivor Receives 2019 Leukemia & Lymphoma Law School Scholarship
North County, San Diego Law Firm’s Annual Scholarship Provides Financial Assistance to Law Students and Aspiring Law Students Whose Lives Have Been Affected by Leukemia and Lymphoma.
- (1888PressRelease) October 21, 2019 - North County, CA – The Law Office of Renkin & Associates has selected Collin, a 2019 Pepperdine University Graduate and first-year law student at Baylor School of Law, as one of two recipients of its 2019 Leukemia & Lymphoma Law School Scholarship.
Collin is a cancer survivor who was diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia at the age of four. As he explains in his winning essay, while he was “surrounded by positive and supportive people,” he also understood from an early age that these people “carried an unspoken fear of what [his] future held.”
Within a month of receiving his diagnosis, Collin’s grandmother was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. While this intensified his families struggles, Collin writes that their diagnoses gave him and his grandmother “a unique bond as [they] went through chemotherapy together.” He credits this relationship, along with his parents’ vigorous devotion to ensuring that he always received his medications at the right times, with his ability to escape his disease’s grasp three years later.
At age 17, Collin received the news that he had officially been declared in remission. He writes, “Rather than influencing my vocation and leading me into medicine, my bout with cancer left a different mark on my life and has subsequently affected my entire worldview. More than anything, I understand the value of serving others and managing your time.” His appreciation for service led him to serving as a counselor at the camp for children with blood disorders that he attended as a child, and we are quite sure that his appreciation for the value of time management will serve him well in the legal profession.
In concluding his essay, Collin writes that, as a result being diagnosed with cancer and having the opportunity to recover with the help of those around him, “[he] developed a spirit of empathy and a drive to improve upon the world in its current state.” He continues, “The legal fabric of our country supports human ingenuity, achievement, and equality. I strive to ensure that this continues to be the case throughout my life.”
The annual Leukemia & Lymphoma Law School Scholarship is open to current and future law students whose lives have been impacted by blood cancer, either personally or through a family member. Winners receive $1,000 that can be used toward books and tuition.
