  • Birmingham, AL (1888PressRelease) April 10, 2013 - Alabama Eye & Cataract Center is pleased to announce that Corneal Specialists & Cataract Surgeons Marc Michelson, M.D. and Tyler Hall, M.D. will perform bladeless laser cataract surgery in Birmingham with the Alcon® LenSx® Femtosecond Laser for patients from throughout Alabama.

"Manual cataract surgery is a technically complex and skill intensive eye surgery procedure," shared Dr. Michelson. "By integrating the laser to assist us in cataract surgery we are able consolidate and control many of the skill intensive steps of cataract removal into a more predictable and more gentle cataract surgery procedure that benefits patients from laser created, surgeon controlled precision resulting in further improved clinical results," explained Dr. Hall.

Drs. Michelson & Hall believe that incorporation of the femtosecond laser into the cataract surgery and lens implant procedure increases precision and accuracy for:

    - Creating "perfect" incisions in terms of size and architecture, which is important in order to have the incision seal properly without the use of stitches and to prevent infection.

    - Creating a perfectly centered and sized "capsulotomy", which is the "opening" prepared in the front of the crystalline lens through which the cloudy lens material is removed.

    - Liquefying, softening or "chopping" the crystalline lens, in order to allow the cloudy material to be removed with less energy inside the eye so as to deliver a gentler eye surgery.

    - Creating the possibility of precise corneal incisions, such as might be performed with Limbal Relaxing Incisions (LRI), to correct pre-existing astigmatism.
