An historic lakefront estate in Lake Tahoe, designed by legendary architect Julia Morgan and once owned by a Schilling spice heiress, is being listed for sale for $20 million, according to the list agents at Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage.

The estate, located at 281 Paradise Flat Lane, is a nine-bedroom, eight-bathroom, more than 4,000-square-foot property. It's situated on seven private wooded acres and features approximately 400 feet of a lakefront sandy beach on Rubicon Bay along Lake Tahoe's exclusive Gold Coast. The property was personally designed by Morgan in 1939 and built in 1944 as the summer home for Else Schilling, spice and coffee company heiress and a friend of Morgan's from San Francisco.
Morgan, who had recently returned from traveling through Bavaria and Austria, had developed a new interest in architecture from that region and worked with Schilling to create a home reminiscent of those located in Austria's Tyrolean Mountains.
The first floor of the home has spacious, paneled rooms ideal for entertaining. The large living room, with stone floors and massive fireplace, features a high ceiling with dramatic open truss work reminiscent of an Austrian hunting lodge. The room's shutters and interior friezes are intricately decorated with some romanticized Austrian hunting scenes. The stone flooring and cozy wall paneling is continued through the dining room, kitchen, butler's kitchen and main floor bedroom. Also on this level is Morgan's interpretation of a nordfriesische bauernstube, a German phrase for a unique style of room where people gather to eat, drink and enjoy themselves.
Upstairs is the master bedroom and bathroom, a large bedroom with separate bath, and two smaller bedrooms and bathroom with access to the back stairs that lead to the kitchen.

Its steeply pitched roof echoes the shape of nearby trees and mountains, with the lake side of the building being primarily glazed. Adjacent to the lake is a large patio with a massive stone fireplace and bar-b-que ideal for cooking and entertaining. Also on the grounds is a tennis court and separate four-bedroom guest cottage that was designed with the same flair as the main home.
