  • (1888PressRelease) February 15, 2008 - Chances are you may never have heard of most of the nominations in these ethical Vegan Oscars

Sir Paul McCartney may have been in with a chance following his plea for environmental reason on ITV's News at Ten but he was apparently too late to be included in 2008's nominations. There is however a nod to McCartney's estranged wife, Lady Heather Mills McCartney, and her efforts in London's Speaker's corner in Hyde Park in autumn 2007 and her environmental work with Viva!, a pro vegan campaigns group in Bristol.

The annual vegan environmental awards 2008, presented every year at the International ly acclaimed Bristol Vegan Fayre, organised by Yaoh hemp foods and sponsored by VeggieVision, were instigated to highlight solutions that can save the planet. Organiser Tim Barford says "Livestock farming accounts for 18% of global emissions – more than transport that emits 13%. Adopting a vegan lifestyle can seriously reduce the impact of your carbon footprint on the planet and the weather."

Nominees are an eclecticly odd mix of vegan campaigners and points of light in the natural health food industry, snubbing most of the usual well plaudited celebrity veggies and high profile celebrity vegans such as Moby and Jacquin Pheonix.

There's no mention of Moby's vegan blog and vegan cafe in New York. No mention of the DVD narrated by Jacquin Pheonix, the new range of vegan shoes by Natalie Portman, the Skinny Bitch vegan diet books, the appearance of vegan poet Benjamin Zephaniah on BBC 1's mastermind or supermodel Kate Moss opting for a new Vegan boyfriend

Many new vegan products fail to reach the nomination list too. There's no nomination for vegan superfood goji berries, the new omega 3 vegan alternative to fish oil, nor for Lush cosmetic's vegan charity pot body lotion, vegan chocolates or even one of the vegan seaweed and algae shakes that is the latest celebrity health prop making news headlines.

Instead the list of 64 nominations include Vegan Entertainers such as Rubber Ritchie and Vegan Pirate of the Carob Bean Long John Tofu, Vegan publications such as 'Get Fresh' and 'Lifescape' , Whole food distributors of vegan foods, Vegan campaigners such as Ingrid Newark from PeTA, Heather Mills McCartney and the directors of Vegfam, the best dairy alternatives such as Plamil Mayonnaise , Bute Island vegan Scheese and B'nice ice cream, best vegan shows such as Animal Aid's Christmas without cruelty and The London Vegan Festival, the best vegan social group such as Thames Valley Vegetarians and Vegans and Vegan Campaigns in London and the best manufacturers of vegan raw food such as Detox your world, Total Raw Food and Raw Living.

Unlike many other awards the winners are based on votes by the public.

The Vegan oscars are widely publicised on Google and Yahoo blogs, Myspace, Youtube and Facebook websites and voters are encouraged by regular monthly vegan prizes. This year sponsors, Veggievision a vegetarian TV company , are hoping to help double the number of voters. Winners will be announced on stage at The Bristol Vegan fayre on the 1st June.
