La Boissellerie cements its furniture expertise at Interiors 2011
La Boissellerie, a European furniture manufacturer, has launched four collections which marry wood (elm and oak) and concrete finishes. These collections will be showcased at the Interiors trade show, which will take place in Birmingham (UK) from 23 to 26 January 2011 (NEC, Hall 1, Stand G40).
- (1888PressRelease) December 10, 2010 - Traditionally, concrete has not been used in furniture, partly because of its high cost. It has recently become available to a wider audience thanks to more accessible finishes, which offer exceptional quality and durability. La Boissellerie offers four lines, which combine concrete and wood: EXTREME, ABSOLU, QUINTESSENCE, and ALLIAGE.
The EXTREME collection, which has been designed by Jean-Marc Laurent, brings together a number of different materials such as untreated elm, concrete finishing wax, metal, and glass. Also designed by Jean-Marc Laurent, ABSOLU (ABSOLUTE) unites untreated oak with concrete, while the QUINTESSENCE range, by Alain Ricard, is available in tawny elm and slate concrete. Designed by Marc Laurent, the ALLIAGE (ALLOY) collection combines untreated elm in all forms with waxed concrete.
Part of the structure of La Boissellerie's furniture is coated with a concrete finishing dye. This coating is composed of cement, fine silica and resin, and is applied manually by a floating process. This method requires at least six coatings to ensure the flawless finish associated with concrete, and is followed by the application of a solvent-free varnish finish, which provides anti-stain protection to ensure that the furniture is easy to maintain. This natural finish, which benefits from sustained mechanical resistance, can also be used on floors or staircases.
There are three main types of concrete finishes: natural concrete, light concrete, and deco concrete.
Natural concrete is composed of a mixture of cement, gravel, water and sand. It offers resistance, but is heavy and tends to become flaky and porous. Light concrete is produced through a process of lightweight fibrous panelling and can be moulded into various shapes. This type of concrete requires greater drying time (28 days) and is more expensive to produce than natural concrete.
The deco concrete used by La Boissellerie is prepared with a base of very fine cement/silica, and replaces water with a small amount of resin. The result is an attractive waxed cement finish where every piece is unique. This process involves the tech 6C technology, which is the result of 10 years' research. The result is an exceptional finish which is stable, waterproof, and not flaky, unlike natural concrete. Besides, it is applicable to numerous surfaces, not constrained by weight, and easily maintained with standard household products.
