However off late, there has been many indications that as a result of global recession, the demand for expats in emerging economies have been shifting towards the local available talent which is easy to procure and cost effective.
Let us take an example of Malaysia. International talent in the Technology Sector is estimated at around 10-12%, predominantly from India, Thailand, Indonesia, and Pakistan. SAP Enterprise package has got the highest percentage of expats, and has about 40-50 % of total workforce from foreign origin. Other package software like Oracle and Siebel has about 15-20% of total workforce from foreign origin while percentage of expats is relatively lower for other skills. On the other side, International talent in Indonesia is estimated at around 4-6%, predominantly from India, Thailand and Malaysia. SAP Enterprise package has got highest percentage of expats with about 12-17%, while other packages have around10-12%.
While many MNC's are happy hiring expats even today as a major portion of the workforce for some of the skills, many midsized companies as well as local government agencies have started focusing on training the readily available local talent on skills which are generally found in the expat population.
