Kerala Biotechnology Commission Funds ubio's Cancer Initiatives

- (1888PressRelease) August 10, 2010 - Kerala Biotechnology Commission(www.biotechcommission.kerala.gov.in) under the Government of Kerala granted research support to ubio Biotechnology systems for developing a rapid differential diagnstic assay for Leukemia. In a press release company said " the project is a breakthrough in cancer diagnosis in India"
Leukemia, which is the most commonly occurring childhood malignancy, is treatable with survival rates of more than 80% with early diagnosis and high-quality medical care, like the highly specialized treatment available in developed countries.
In developing and under developed countries, although there are several oncology institutes and cancer care centers, very few patients have access to specialized treatment. The reasons for this are low socioeconomic status, distance from the treatment center and the financial burden of chemotherapy, supportive treatment and simultaneously supporting the family back home. The secondary care hospitals do not have most of the advanced diagnosis systems like Immunohistochemistry and Cytogenetics, and very often, diagnosis is performed using dated techniques like blood and bone-marrow examination with Leishman stain, PAS and Sudan Black. This leads to poor categorization of disease and sub-optimal treatment.
"By developing a low-cost, confirmatory leukemia diagnosis platform, we attempt to provide our secondary care hospitals an effective tool to implement and improve leukemia treatment" company spokesperson said. The project will be implemented in collaboration with the cancer research wong of regional cancer center, a primer cancer institute in India engaged in Cancer research and treatment.
