Just Giving and City & Guilds Back Volunteering for Career Development
With sources from high-profile companies, this white paper from i-to-i shows the benefits of volunteering for career development.
- Yuma, AZ (1888PressRelease) June 16, 2015 - A white paper released this week by volunteer travel company i-to-i and with contribution from City & Guilds, Just Giving and other organisations has highlighted the benefits for businesses of hiring employees with volunteer travel experience.
Working closely with the HR departments of a wide range of businesses, as well as educational institutions and young volunteers, the research found that students gaining soft skills, such as independence, confidence and decision-making, through volunteer travel were more appealing to employers and therefore enhanced their career prospects. Volunteer travel is an often challenging pursuit that develops both life experience and skills which are transferable to a variety of employment situations.
The findings support the CNCS study conducted in 2013 which states that volunteering is associated with 27% higher odds of employment.
40% of volunteer travellers said that they had enhanced communication, decision making and team building skills following their experience, while 30% said they had increased their leadership, organisational and foreign language skills, all highly valuable traits for businesses.
Commenting on the findings Jason Woodford Chief Executive at SiteVisibility, said; "Soft skills developed through volunteering are invaluable for employees within a business. Skills like confidence, interpersonal communication and leadership are what make employees stand-out and we would very much encourage them to be honed through volunteer travel."
i-to-i "By hiring candidates who have developed soft skills through volunteer travel, employers can benefit from a more well-rounded and fulfilled work force who can adapt easily to challenges in the workplace."
