Judaica Discovery: Rebbe Nachman of Breslov lost antique chair found in Tamoikin Art Fund
Lost chair that belonged to Rebbe Nachman of Breslov, founder of the Breslov Hasidic Jewish movement, is discovered in the possession of the Tamoikin Art Fund.
- (1888PressRelease) July 26, 2019 - One of a kind antique chair that belonged to the founder of the Breslov Hasidic Jewish movement, Rebbe Nachman of Breslov (1772-1810), also known as Nachman from Uman, has just been unveiled by the Tamoikin Art Fund. In a recent one-hour-long video presentation prof. Michael Tamoikin, vice-president of the fund, displayed this rare find. The discovery of Rebbe Nachman's chair is considered by many to be one of the most important cultural news events of the year for the Breslov Hasidic movement and the Judaica community at large.
While the value of Rebbe Nachman's chair has not been publicly announced, experts estimate it to be between $5-10 million, well within the appetite of the Tamoikins family. Multiple sources indicate that this rare example of antique Jewish furniture is being prepared for a private sale which is expected to take place in the months to come. Antique chairs that belonged to famous historical figures are extremely rare and are often found only in most recognized museums. How the Tamoikin Art Fund acquired this artifact is uncertain.
Prof. Tamoikin is a highly controversial decamillionaire and entrepreneur who is often criticized for unethical monetization of important historic artifacts that should belong in state museums. A known art expert, who dealt with the Tamoikin Art Fund, stated that "Tamoikin family is known for such sensational discoveries due to their vast network of art dealers and close connection to the world's most wealthy people." In 2008 Tamoikins covertly sold ‘The Solovetsky Iconostasis’ an ancient Russian religious icon, for $5 million to a Russian oligarch. This June they sold a 16th century portrait of Benvenuto Cellini, priced at $125 million, to the Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince.*
Being the founder of the Breslov Hasidic Jewish movement, Rebbe Nachman of Breslov is a very important historical Jewish figure that is revered by the Hasidic Jews. All artifacts that are associated with his life are carefully preserved by the Hasidic community. Without a doubt this artifact will be closely watched by Jewish cultural leaders.
