March 24, 2018, at the Los Angeles Convention Center

Aided by an incredible, value-packed day, still only in pre-sales, Film Con Hollywood’s message of promoting meaningful connections among talented young people looking to innovate, collaborate, and create content with others at similar stages, and form lasting, self-empowered communities, has proven wildly popular, 300 passes being purchased two days before general public sales officially kick off.

An event for young people pursuing careers in film, media, and entertainment, Film Con Hollywood 2018 is jam packed with actionable information and insight, and carefully designed to empower and inspire young people pursuing careers in film, television and media, take their skills, abilities, and careers to the next level.

A headline Keynote Speaker (four studio CEOs are being discussed) will kick off the day, followed by three panels: 1. Star Businesswomen in Hollywood, 2. Representation for Talent (Agents, Managers, and Entertainment Attorneys) and a 3. Diversity Panel featuring industry stars working and succeeding to advance the workplace for women and minority voices.

With technology, distribution, and communication intersecting to form the perfect storm of opportunity to create, distribute, and achieve lucrative sales of incredible content, there has never been a better time for young people starting out in Hollywood. Still, as a young person, it is difficult knowing where to begin. The guiding belief at Film Con Hollywood is that knowledge is power, and the gap between high-achieving industry leaders and young people is the bridge we must build.

Perhaps the biggest draw of the day is the $10,000 in Short Film Competition (:30-5:00 length films) prizes and scholarship, open to all Film Con Hollywood attendees, including those entering the competition and participating remotely from anywhere in the world. Three categories are being contested, each with a $3,000 top prize: 1. The Open Competition 2. The Female only competition, a competition to promote the desperately needed voices of female filmmakers and stories in Hollywood 3. The Pitch Competition, an opportunity for anyone who has never made a film to come up with a story and script, put it into writing, and pitch it to the judges, the winner getting the cash prize, in addition to the mentorship and resources necessary to make a film reflecting their vision.

Film Con Hollywood 2018’s venue is the venerable Los Angeles Convention Center, a historic venue immediately neighboring the Staples Center in Downtown Los Angeles, where the 10 and 110 freeways intersect. The Los Angeles Convention Center attracts millions of visitors annually and is renowned internationally as a prime site for conventions, trade shows, and exhibitions, consistently getting recognized as a leader in the events industry, having provided exceptional facilities and service to patrons for decades. First opened to the public in 1971, the LACC has undergone modernization and expansions, the team at LACC always remaining focused on its committed to excellence, proudly serving to benefit the local community and championing environmental sustainability and social responsibility for the Southern California community.

The newest addition to the Film Con Hollywood 2018’s powerful lineup is super-producer Mandy Teefey (Kicked to the Curb Productions), one of the hottest producers in Hollywood. A force behind Netflix’s critically acclaimed “13 Reasons Why”, Teefey has multiple film projects in development, her incredible record of home run successes having earned her that rarest of Hollywood luxuries of only pursuing projects she finds inspiring and meaningful. A true self-made woman, Teefey was the architect behind daughter Selena Gomez’s acting and singing career, recognizing her incredible early talent, deciding to move to Hollywood, partnering with Disney, and at every step of the way offering the stability and guidance necessary for Gomez’s rise to global superstardom. “My mom means my happiness, my love, my best friend and the world to me,” Selena said in an interview with Just Jared. “She is the reason I smile and the reason I am here.” Teefey invariably ranks high on any Hollywood list of women executives doing great things and breaking barriers to help expand the role of women in the entertainment industry. And as always one of the youngest on the lists, Teefey is amazingly just entering her prime.

Rising Hollywood star David Rountree, recognized by by Hollywood Reporter as one of the Top 10 directors under 40, of the critically acclaimed thriller, CUT!, praised by mrrankings.com as one of the Top 5 Horror Movies of The Year, has been commissioned to take over the speaker lineup and tap his vast Hollywood rolodex— a priceless and diverse network he is finely curating into a well-rounded lineup that adds the kind of actionable and practical knowledge to the skillsets of young Film Con Hollywood attendees. Rountree, who began his career opposite Britney Spears in the video for her global smash “Ooops I Did It Again” as the victim of heartbreak, has put the full power of LA Acting Studios to work to make sure attendees have an immersive day of filmmaking, acting, writing, in addition to picking up necessary, practical business advice.

One of David’s first commitments was from Stage 32 mogul Richard Botto. Fresh off a trip to Sundance, where his book, “Crowdsourcing for Filmmakers: Indie Film and the Power of the Crowd” was a massive hit, Botto invariably draws praise as one of the most innovative and generous figures in Hollywood. Stage 32, a US-based social network and educational site for creative professionals who work in film, television and theater, has been described by Forbes as ”Lynda.com Meets LinkedIn For Film, Television And Theater Creatives." Nearing a million professionals, Stage 32 links entertainment industry figures, including directors, writers, actors and entertainment staff, and its meetups page, an online lounge and a jobs page that allows members to connect with others on film ventures, along with standard social media functions, has long been a go-to source for Hollywood leaders. An Orson Welles fan, Botto drew his inspiration for the name "Stage 32" from the old RKO Soundstage 17 where Citizen Kane was filmed, stating that he created Stage 32 in order to connect, to educate, and to increase the odds of success for creative professionals in the film and television industries, regardless of their geographical location. Perhaps the greatest success of the platform has been The Stage 32 Happy Writers.

By May 2014, the web site had more than 325,000 members and announced a partnership with The Blood List, Search for New Blood Screenwriting Contest with the top 3 screenplays being featured on The Blood List "New Blood" section and the winner being flown to LA to have a meeting with Richard Potter, executive Vice President of Relativity Media. The winner of the New Blood Screenwritng Contest, Glenn Forbes, was signed by Infinity Management Group and the 2nd-place winner, Frank Ponce, signed an agreement with Atlas Entertainment. A year later, Stage 32 and Producer's Guild of America Women’s Impact Network launched an education and pitching event looking for female-centric scripts, that same year getting featured in the NEXT Pavilion at the Cannes Film Festival Marche du Film as a leader in the convergence of entertainment and tech. Botto spoke on a panel about social media and crowdsourcing for filmmakers which was attended by top media and filmmakers from around the world.

But perhaps the most important speaker at Film Con Hollywood 2018 will be Black-ish star Allen Maldonado. Maldonado arrived in Hollywood at 21 like many others with only a dream, not knowing anyone, only to be struck by a drunk driver. But through incredible determination and spirit, within a year, not only had he recovered, he had landed a role on The Young and the Restless. Maldonado’s relentless striving led to him making more of his own luck, relentlessly pursuing every opening and lead, grinding it out as a working actor and writer until success finally presented itself in 2015, one incredible blessing after another (The Equalizer, Black-ish, Survivor’s Remorse).

Today, Maldonado is one of young Hollywood’s busiest stars on the rise. The multi-talented actor, writer and entrepreneur, not only co-stars on the award-winning sitcom, Black-ish (ABC), he has also finished his second season as a full time writer on the hit Starz series, Survivors Remorse, has recurred for three seasons on You’re The Worst (FXX), is starring opposite Tracy Morgan in The Last OG, his highly anticipated new series on TBS Executive Produced by Jordan Peele, and has developed the industry’s first digital app for short films, Everybody Digital, launched on October 3, 2017, an breakthrough platform he will display at Film Con Hollywood.

On March 24, 2018, Allen tells the specifics of his story, detailing how he succeeded in getting a successful Hollywood career.

There is no magical formula for success in Hollywood. Even for those already working and succeeding in the industry, it takes tremendous hard work, revitalizing of fresh ideas and collaborations, and obsessive polishing and refinement of the craft. Additionally, certain intangibles must be put to work to reach the next level. Knowing the playing field, having an inner circle/team you can work with and fully trust, and having a network of contacts to guide you in navigating the unknowns, and make next level introductions.

With $10,000 in awards cash at stake for attendees, the great prestige of winning a Film Con Hollywood 2018 film competition, new friendship and network pools to be expanded, Hollywood celebrities and studio executives making their presences felt, an incredible Spring Break Saturday is fast coming together in Downtown Los Angeles.
