John Wesley College Gains New Name And Logo; Reaffirms Mission
Since its 1903 beginnings in Greensboro, John Wesley College's five name changes aimed to more clearly communicate its mission and focus. Recently, JWC's Board of Trustees agreed to another name change.
- (1888PressRelease) January 27, 2011 - HIGH POINT, NC - In 2010, President Dr. Larry McCullough and the Board of Trustees at John Wesley College committed to position the school as a creative education provider for Christian leaders, with increased outreach to the adult learner and expanded involvement in the community. Strategic goals informed the hiring of new key personnel in July. In August, the school unveiled its totally-online MBA program, indicating that more exciting news would soon be disclosed.
In November, John Wesley College swelled its enrollment with the addition of FLET, an accredited distance education university with programs in Spanish and English, serving students from over 30 countries worldwide. "High Point's Other University" became a global education provider of accredited Christian leadership training, especially among the Hispanic/Latino population, allowing students to complete graduate studies online in Christian education and theological studies as well as business administration.
"With the new name choice, the school re-affirms its strong commitment to our interdenominational Christian heritage and mission. We want a name that speaks of a future, a new horizon, that communicates energy and progress with simplicity," states McCullough. "In addition, our new name needed to be understood internationally. Around the world, the word 'college' often designates a K-12 program, not a higher education institution. We desire to clearly indicate our university status, especially now that we offer multiple graduate degrees."
A local brand strategy and marketing communications agency, McNeill Communications Group, Inc., provided crucial branding consultancy and presented their findings to the Board, which unanimously voted to change the name of John Wesley College to Laurel University.
Laurel University's new logo combines contemporary and classic elements with bold, lively colors, reflecting the integration of new vibrancy with continued mission. Reminiscent of a dove, the icon of stylized laurel leaves symbolizes Laurel U's distinctive commitment to its Christian values.
Recently, the High Point Chamber of Commerce co-sponsored an event for media and community leaders to unveil Laurel University's new logo and "look." At the same time, the school's new sign on Eastchester Drive as provided by LOF Graphics became available for public view.
