John Lines Solo Exhibition at Red Rag Gallery Stow on the Wold Gloucestershire UK from 20 February 2011
An exhibition celebrating inspiring art work by contemporary British artist, John Lines, particularly well known for recording the life of the British countryside and towns; and whose stated aim is "simply to paint through honest eyes".
- (1888PressRelease) January 02, 2011 - John is known particularly, though not exclusively, for his work in recording the life of the British countryside and towns, especially in the Midland counties - Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire, Warwickshire and the West Midlands all feature, along with Lancashire and Yorkshire, as favourite locations. Indeed his paintings of the British urban experience may in future be seen as a fine social record of life in the UK over his lifetime. His own stated aim is "simply to paint through honest eyes".
John has been exhibiting his contemporary paintings since leaving art school, though initially his time was shared between his art and his work in industry. His paintings are distinctively Modern British, mostly in oil or watercolour; and are varied in subject and content, capturing humour, nostalgia and romance as well as the raw beauty of the countryside, marine and coastal scenes; railways and other forms of transportation; and the myriad aspects of urban social life in the UK.
Carole Teagle, Gallery Manager at Red Rag Gallery, said, "We are very pleased to be hosting another solo exhibition for John Lines after his successful 'Town and Country' show in 2009. John is an exceptional artist who is able to convey the honesty and integrity of a scene with skill, ease and, very often, with a humour that reflects a deep understanding of the human condition."
John is a son of Warwickshire: he was born in Rugby in August, 1938 and studied art at the Rugby Polytechnic from 1959 and then at the York School of Art from 1961 to 1962. He is a Member of the Royal Society of Birmingham Artists (1996); the Royal Society of Marine Artists (2002); and the Guild of Railway Artists. He is also Vice President of the Rugby Art Society and President of the Kineton Art Society. He has held workshops and given lectures in Australia and the USA; as well as lectures, workshops and demonstrations throughout the British Isles.
John was awarded the Shipwright's Prize by the Royal Society of Marine Artists in 1999; won First Prize at the Museum of Modern Art in Wales in 2001; and RDAS First Prize, 2008; as well as awards at the Royal Society of Birmingham Artists.
Following his first exhibition in 1962, John has held or been involved in several major exhibitions including Keele University (1986), 'ING Discerning Eye' Exhibition (Mall Galleries, 1995); Royal Birmingham Society of Artists Open Exhibition (1999); Royal Society of Marine Artists Annual Exhibition (Mall Galleries, 1999); Museum of Modern Art, Wales (2001) and RDAS (2008).
