ITUC leaks: Sharan Burrow and Gemma Swart corporate business politics exposed
Whistleblower website, Global Leaks, has revealed substantial material that apparently indicates the International Trade Union Confederation could be involved in politics and profit-seeking conduct.
- (1888PressRelease) January 23, 2016 - When it comes to worker's rights, we all stand united. They are the spine of the industry and ensuring their well-being is a noble cause. But what when there are hidden interests aligned to it, sort of like shooting over the shoulder?
General secretary Sharan Burrow appears to be the architect and instigator.
Incidentally, Ms Burrow is the co-chair of the ongoing annual meeting held by the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
The former ACTU leader has her hands full, any way. Reportedly, she is doing what she does best - Harass.
Perhaps bored with attacking FIFA, she has trained her guns on the big global corporate, such as Amazon, Samsung, Apple and a few more unfortunate ones. Reading to a script, she has pointed out: "Sixty per cent of global trade in the real economy is dependent on the supply chains of our major corporations, which uses a business model based on exploitation and abuse of human rights in supply chains".
The intent is pious, but the method is devious. Targeting every company that built its fortunes through blood and sweat and saying they are all evil is a dangerous argument. Workers' rights can be achieved through negotiations, by sitting down and talking. Vicious campaigns will always come back to bite in the back, and the workers will still be there where they were. So what's the point?
A source close to ITUC has pointed out that a number of NGOs and press agencies are having a re-look at ITUC's report of January 2016 with a different perspective. In October, 2015, Geneva-based newspaper, Tribune de Geneve published an article that reported growing dissent with ITUC. There appears to be disenchantment with her idea of how the trade union should function.
Massive funds, gathered from over 160 affiliates, are being funnelled towards media campaign against FIFA and the supply chain report for Davos World Economic Forum. The Public Relations firm engaged to lead the assault, Essential Media Communications, is hand-in-glove unethically with ITUC and an investigation into its financial transactions is overdue.
EMC's Gemma Swart, who has evolved over the past few years as Sharan Burrow's right-hand lady, seems to be doing all the dirty work for the ITUC chief. Her LinkedIn profile reveals much more.
The latest installment of ITUC leaks that has appeared in globaleaks.org contains dozens of embarrassing internal emails and related attachments, exposing the devious manner in which the trade union is operating.
