IT student named Belmont Financial's first Hong Kong Technology Intern
Belmont Financial Group's Technology Internship programme was created to display the variety of employment opportunities at the firm, by giving IT students at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) a chance to view the firm from a first-hand perspective.
- (1888PressRelease) October 21, 2015 - Jimmy Law, 23, is studying towards a Bachelor of Information Technology degree, majoring in Programming and Information Security. Each week he spends a day at Belmont's IT office in Central Hong Kong, learning about different parts of the business. "I am spending time in each part of the IT team - from attending business meetings where decisions are made about projects, to compliance, technical testing, quality assurance and looking into what is required to support Belmont's day-to-day operations." said Jimmy. "The Technology Internship is a life changing opportunity. I wasn't thinking about wealth management at the start of my degree, purely because I wasn't aware of the prospects." he continued.
"The Technology Internship here has opened my eyes to the range of sectors that my education can cast me into. People think of Belmont as purely investing. But the fact of the matter is it's also a huge technology company with tons of opportunities in all aspects of IT. Any IT job you can think of, there will be someone at Belmont doing it." He concluded.
The Technology Internship is a part of a new collaboration between Belmont Financial Group and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), designed to address the skills shortage in the IT industry.
Belmont's Vice President of Technology, Richard Saxon, says: "Jimmy's abilities, attitude and commitment have been recognised by Belmont, who have bestowed him its first Hong Kong Technology Internship. We're confident Technology Internships will mean more IT students will consider working in the finance industry once they graduate. IT is constantly evolving and we're keen to attract the best talent, like Jimmy, to keep up with advancing technologies, especially to guard against cybercrimes and financial fraud.
"With one of the largest Schools of Business and IT in the country, and almost 10,000 people attending at degree and post graduate level, HKUST was the ideal partner to work with to start addressing the IT skills shortage in the IT industry."
The 2016 Belmont Technology Internships are now open for application to students until 4th March 2016. Students need Hong Kong permanent residency and will be completing a Bachelor of Technology (preferred). The 150-hour internship is worked out over the final year of study. Belmont Financial Group are also developing an internship programme in Tokyo, Japan. Details will be released in due course.
