ISO Releases New ‘Migration of Certain Elements’ Toy Safety Standard

In March 2020, ISO releases 8124-3:2020 for the migration of certain elements from toys containing new procedures for dewaxing and a new section for the analysis of elements. End Quote

(1888PressRelease) April 17, 2020 - The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has published an updated version of ISO 8124 – Safety of Toys – Part 3: Migration of certain elements. Published in March 2020, the latest version includes revisions previously detailed in ISO 8124-3:2010/Amd.1:2014 and ISO 8124-3:2010/Amd.2:2018.

The new version of the standard separates the definitions for paper and paperboard.

Paper is defined as, “sheet formed by irregularly intervened cellulose fibers with a mass per unit area of 400 g/m2 or less”. It does not include, “paper with polymeric lamination, or other treatments which may be resistant to wetting.” Products that no longer present the same properties as paper will not be treated as paper.

Paperboard is defined as, “sheet formed by irregularly intervened cellulose fibers with a mass per unit area over 400 g/m2, excluding pressed wooden fiberboards such as medium density fiberboard (MDF), chipboard and materials with similar properties.” This category includes card and cardboard.

ISO 8124-3:2020 also includes:
• Two detailed methods for using n-heptane to remove grease, oil, wax, or similar materials on solid form materials intended to leave a trace (Methods A and B)
• A completely new Annex C as informative content for preparative and analytical procedures involving the analysis of eight elements using Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES). The eight elements and their maximum levels per day are:
o Antimony — 0,2 µg
o Arsenic — 0,1 µg
o Barium — 25,0 µg
o Cadmium — 0,6 µg
o Chromium — 0,3 µg
o Lead — 0,7 µg
o Mercury — 0,5 µg
o Selenium — 5,0 µg

Stakeholders are advised to now check their products conform to the latest version of this standard.
