A new resource is available for post-bariatric patients to find plastic surgeons specialized in bariatric plastic surgery throughout the world.
Plastic Surgeons around the world helping bariatric patients complete their journeys
(1888PressRelease) September 20, 2016 - The International Society of Bariatric Plastic Surgeons has been founded to provide a forum for plastic surgeons from around the world to exchange ideas for the treatment of those patients that have lost large amounts of weight and to provide information about procedures and help available to bariatric plastic surgery patients in finding plastic surgeons and resources in their respective countries.
Obesity is now a global epidemic problem with at least 300 million people suffering from obesity as reported by the World Health Organization. Treatment has centered on diet, exercise and medications, but with safer and more effective procedures, more of these patients are resorting to surgical intervention like LapBand, gastric bypass and gastric balloon according to the available statistics of the American Society of Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS).
"Because of the latter," said Dr. Edward Domanskis, interim president of the International Society of Bariatric Plastic Surgeons," the number of post-bariatric procedures performed by plastic surgeons has multiplied." "Once the face, body and breasts deflate from losing massive amounts of weight, hanging, excess skin is present which is removed through specialized bariatric plastic surgery procedures," he continued.
No statistics are yet available for how many of these procedures are performed yearly world-wide but in the United States, there has been an exponential increase in lower body lift, arm lift, of 3973%, 4959% respectively over five recent years, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons(ASPS), which can be mostly attributed to post-bariatric plastic surgery.
Just like the American Society of Bariatric Plastic Surgeons (ASBPS), the International Society of Bariatric Plastic Surgeons (ISBPS) is composed of plastic surgeons throughout the world that have a special interest in dealing with this specialized and emerging sub-specialty field of plastic surgery. They are all active members of their national plastic surgery societies.
"By establishing the International Society of Bariatric Plastic Surgeons, I look forward to bringing our plastic surgeons throughout the world together to address globicity and caring for the growing population of post-bariatric patients," concluded Dr. Domanskis.
