  • (1888PressRelease) August 19, 2012 - Hyderabad/Vizag - International Paper today announced the inauguration of the check dam at Mamidilova, a village 35 kms away from Vizag. International Paper sponsored the development of the check dam as part of the company's overarching sustainability efforts.

Mr. Rampraveen Swaminathan, Managing Director and CEO, The Andhra Pradesh Paper Mills (an International Paper group company) inaugurated the check dam at Mamidilova village amidst a gathering of several officials, farmers and residents of the village.

Commenting on the initiative, Mr. Rampraveen Swaminthan said, "The check dam is a unique and simple solution to bring benefits to the farmer, the village, the environment and the company. We are continuously working toward finding innovative solutions to address sustainability; the Mamidilova check dam is one such initiative."

With the integration of irrigation and employment of genetically superior planting material, the Casuarina wood productivity of the area is set to increase from the current 20,000 M.T. per annum of to 70,000 M.T. per annum. Around 4,800 acres of land in the area are expected to benefit from this initiative.

The Need for a Check Dam

Each year, the company provides more than double the seedlings that are required to generate the pulp for paper production. International Paper encourages farmers to plant these seedlings by providing them at minimal cost. The company also works closely with tree farmers through the harvest stage and later buys the pulpwood from them, which significantly contributes to their livelihood.

During a discussion with the Mamidilova village panchayat, International Paper identified problems of deterioration of the farm lands due to soil erosion and water-run off caused by lack of water catchment during monsoons. It was then decided that construction of a check dam will help arrest the problem and result in multiple benefits including enhanced productivity, soil and water conservation, carbon sink creation, environment amelioration and socio-economic upliftment of farmers.

International Paper in India has supported the farmers to develop farm forestry plantation of over 1.3 lakh hectare of marginal fallow, degraded land and wastelands in coastal Andhra Pradesh with nitrogen fixation tree species. Additionally, International Paper works closely with the farmers, residents of villages and administration to facilitate development of infrastructure, provide regular medical facilities to the remote villages, development of bus shelters and distribution of books and bags to school children.
