International Literacy Day - Bhilwara Rajasthan Sangam University
In India today, no one has doubt that literacy which is vital to social and human development in its ability to transform lives is a top ranking human right and the foundation for lifelong learning.
- (1888PressRelease) September 11, 2012 - To bring about the improvement of one's health, one's income, and one's relationship with the world, literacy is an instrument of empowerment for individuals as well as families, and societies alike. The uses of literacy for the exchange of knowledge are constantly evolving, along with advances in technology. From the Internet to text messaging, the ever-wider availability of communication makes for greater social and political participation. A literate community is a dynamic community, one that exchanges ideas and engages in debate. Illiteracy, however, is an obstacle to a better quality of life, and can even breed exclusion and violence.
On the occasion of International Literacy Day with theme "Literacy and Peace" scheduled on 08 Sep 2012, Prof BR Natarajan President - Vice Chancellor Sangam University, Bhilwara addressing the faculty and students of Literary Club, communicated the following:
Literacy contributes to peace as it brings people closer to attaining individual freedoms and better understanding the world, as well as preventing or resolving conflict. The connection between literacy and peace can be seen by the fact that in unstable democracies or in conflict-affected countries it is harder to establish or sustain a literate environment. Further, without literacy, there is no chance of aspiration meeting opportunity.
Many ways of joining the celebrations include by Donating books and reading materials to a local school or community centre, starting a reading club, volunteering to teach literacy classes in local community, becoming a mentor of a non-literate person, etc.
To quote Irina Bokova, UNESCO Director General "Education brings sustainability to all the development goals, and literacy is the foundation of all learning. It provides individuals with the skills to understand the world and shape it, to participate in democratic processes and have a voice, and also to strengthen their cultural identity."
Literary club of Sangam University also organized an essay writing competition for the students on topics Literacy and Women Empowerment, Removing Voting rights for illiterates and Importance of Literacy for socio economic development of the nation.
