International Institute of Akron Holds Summerfest Fundraiser
International Bazaar Features Music and Cuisine from Around the World; Supports Refugees.
- Akron, OH (1888PressRelease) May 24, 2012 - The International Institute of Akron (IIA) will hold its only annual fundraiser, Summerfest on Friday, June 15, 2012 at 6:00 p.m. The event will take place at the home of Dr. and Mrs. Richard O'Desky in Bath, Ohio. All proceeds from ticket sales and auction items will be used to continue IIA's programs and services benefiting refugees and immigrants in the local Akron area.
The 2012 Summerfest will transport attendees to an International Bazaar designed to celebrate Akron's wealthy history of ethnic diversity through music, cuisine and auction items for sale. The evening's entertainment will include James Kalal, internationally know flamenco and classical guitarist, and the St. Nicholas Balalaika Orchestra performing traditional Russian folk music. A substantial number of unique auction items will also be available for bids. According to Don McCardle, Chairman of the Auction Committee, "The packages this year are spectacular, from destination packages at country clubs and sports venues to jewelry, celebrity tickets and fine dining."
"IIA has two primary areas of focus. The first priority is helping refugees who have just settled in our community to become self-sufficient as quickly as possible," said Pamela Hickson-Stevenson, Chair of Summerfest. "The second priority is to reunite refugee families and help them obtain citizenship. Summerfest is a wonderful opportunity for others to learn more about what we do and to make a contribution, so these programs can continue."
IIA has provided services to Akron and the surrounding communities for 96 years. Just in 2012 alone, IIA's services will help over 10,000 Summit County residents improve their lives. Many of the refugees that come to the IIA have lived only in refugee camps, or spent years fleeing persecution. IIA provides job counseling, placement services, interpretation and translation services and classes teaching English, life skills and financial literacy.
