Inroads to Opportunities is a Union County, NJ, based non-profit, social services agency that provides programs and services to individuals with disabilities ranging in age from 16 to retirement. As the largest skills training program for individuals with disabilities in New Jersey, Inroads offers vocational preparation, transition from school to work, job placement and coaching, certificate training programs, day habilitation, and mental health services.
In a wide-ranging conversation with Host Robbie Ross, Calzone spoke passionately about providing support for individuals with disabilities. As she stated, “We aren't there to encroach, we're not there to get in front of them, this is about that individual being independent …if they choose to go it alone we’re behind them every step of the way.”
Calzone further elaborated, “There are a lot of misconceptions, that they might not perform as expected… So, we try to make sure we are not only advocating for employees with disabilities, but we’re also working with employers making sure they understand what's fact and what's fiction and how important it is to not only open your doors but open your minds.”
Calzone shared a recent success story, highlighting a clean up event hosted by the town’s mayor, “The mayor took notice of how wonderful and diligent one of our young men was performing… and starting this spring, he will work in the department of public works as an employee.” She excitedly adds, “Not only are we going out to the community at large, the community is coming to us!”
