About the Author: Isaac Watts (1674-1748) was the son of a "nonconformist". Noncomformists were people who had separated from the Church of England and were very dedicated, Bible-believing Christians who disagreed with the position of the State Church. Isaac was a small, frail man with a great mind, much talent, and a consuming love for Christ, his Lord. In his early 20's, he wrote a large number of hymns with which many Christians are familiar today. Some of his most popular works include Joy to the World, At the Cross, When I Survey the Wondrous Cross, We're Marching to Zion, O God Our Help in Ages Past, and Am I a Soldier of the Cross? Watts' technique for rendering the Psalms in verse and his prodigious body of work ultimately resulted in his recognition as the "Father of the English Hymn".
