  • (1888PressRelease) October 23, 2012 - Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead relates an intense and captivating struggle of an architect to follow his commitment to his art despite institutional resistance he meets with in the form of the cult of traditionalism.

Howard Roark, the hero of the novel, as stated before, is an architect with a firm conviction about the modern architecture being superior to the one which is tradition-bound. He painstakingly persists in following the vision of architecture he has embraced. In the right sense of the word he is markedly individualistic.

In the course of the novel we see other characters relating themselves with Roark in a number of significant respects. They are archetypes of human character, expressed variously through replication of Roark, Ayn Rand's concept of ideal man who acts as a free spirit and with integrity, and characters considered by her as the second-handers. Some stand in positive relationship with him whereas some relate with him negatively. But looking at either kind of relationship, it is the subtlety which marks it that fascinates us. At the same time, this particular aspect of the novel also renders it profoundly philosophical.

However, the point of the novel is the triumph of individualism against collectivism. The success of the novel can be gauged from the fact that as far back as in 1943, when marketing tactics were not as advanced and developed as they are today, it sold over 6.5 million copies worldwide and became the best-seller.
