  • South Bend-Mishawaka, IN-MI (1888PressRelease) January 08, 2015 - Scott Buck, M.D. of Northwest Indiana Eye & Laser Center commented on the positive impact of advances and improvements in diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma that have resulted in a considerable decrease in glaucoma blindness. "Since returning to Valparaiso to practice ophthalmology some 15 years ago I have really seen the benefits of both technology and focused patient education and awareness regarding glaucoma risks and need for early diagnosis and treatment when necessary," shared Dr. Scott Buck. "Each January in conjunction with Glaucoma Awareness Month, as designated by the American Academy of Ophthalmology, we make an extra effort at Northwest Indiana Eye & Laser Center to remind patients of the need for regular eye exams and glaucoma testing that might be necessary. This, coupled with the advances in glaucoma testing such as in office optical coherence tomography (OCT) and high resolution digital photography of the optic nerve along with the major improvements in glaucoma treatment such as lasers and microscopic glaucoma implants have resulted in a notable decrease in vision loss and blindness from glaucoma," explained Dr. Buck.

    About Glaucoma
Glaucoma is an eye condition whereby the internal fluid does not properly drain from the eye resulting in high intraocular pressure that can damage the optic nerve. In the United States, 2.7 million people age 40 and older have the condition. If left untreated, glaucoma slowly and progressively reduces peripheral vision and eventually may cause blindness. According to researchers from the Mayo Clinic who reported study results in Ophthalmology, the likelihood of losing sight in one eye was 28 percent for patients diagnosed with glaucoma between 1965 and1980. That number fell to 13.5 percent for patients diagnosed between 1981 and 2000.

"What the researchers at Mayo Clinic reported is exactly what we see in northwest Indiana and reinforces our dedication and commitment to stress the ongoing patient education and continue to bring advances in glaucoma diagnosis and treatment to our community," commented Dr. Buck. "That said, patients must continue to do their part and schedule regular eye exams with glaucoma testing as this is the best way to detect glaucoma early and if needed, initiate treatment as quickly as possible."
