Indiana Cataract Surgeon Scott Buck, M.D. of Northwest Indiana Eye & Laser Center acknowledged Cataract Awareness Month by helping patients understand the greater contribution cataract surgery makes to quality of life and longevity.
South Bend-Mishawaka, IN-MI (1888PressRelease) August 02, 2014 - Symptoms of Cataracts
"For many patients the awareness of the symptoms of cataracts begins slowly. They may start to notice cloudy or foggy vision, a real sensitivity to light and glare, difficulty with night driving, shadowy almost double vision and sometimes a fading or yellowing of colors," said Dr. Scott Buck. "But what is even more subtle than the onset of these vision problems is how they affect daily living and quality of life," shared Dr. Buck.
Cataract Impact on Quality of Life
"Vision loss, in seniors in particular, can play a significant role their physical and mental health. It is not uncommon for us to hear from seniors or their caregivers that patients have stopped driving-especially at night, no longer read their mail regularly, can't reliably sort and take medicines and most troubling become isolated and even depressed," explained Dr. Buck.
"Studies now demonstrate that while the benefits of cataract surgery certainly improve overall quality of life, today we actually know cataract surgery improves safety and mobility in such a meaningful way that the risk of hip fracture is reduced among seniors and more important patients having cataract surgery actually live longer," further noted Dr. Buck. As August is Cataract Awareness Month, Northwest Indiana Eye & Laser Center encourages seniors to have regular eye exams, to be aware and not ignore the symptoms of cataracts as they can increase their risk of both physical and psychological problems.
