India's First Ever Comprehensive Diabetes and Endocrine care Facility launched today by Union Minister of Shipping- Shri Vasan in Chennai
Medfort Hospitals launched its flagship 'Medfort Hospitals for Diabetes and Endocrine Care' in Chennai today.
- (1888PressRelease) January 21, 2011 - Chennai - It was inaugurated by Thiru G.K Vasan, Honourable Union Minister for Shipping, Government of India. Being billed as India's first comprehensive facility focused on diabetes and endocrine care, the hospital will offer disease management solutions ranging from diagnostic tools for predicting pre - diabetes to facilities for the management of diabetes related complications.
Addressing the occasion Shri Vasan, said," I'm not from this medical fraternity but any Indian today clearly understands the importance and need of such a specialized Diabetes care centre. India has more than 5 crore of people suffering from diabetes and endocrine disorders and the numbers are growing day by day. Understanding the gravity of the situation, the Govt. of India has also started putting more focus on prevention and management of non-communicable diseases and has increased the next five year budget from more than Rs. 17000 crores to more than Rs. 23000 crores."
He added that, "Our govt. is doing the bit but more such private enterprises like Medfort Hospitals are required to help in reducing this disease burden and not allow Diabetes and other non-communicable disease to over-power us, rather collectively we should be able to over-power this disease epidemic for the betterment of the mankind. Such single speciality hospitals will definitely make a difference in over-crowed healthcare space and provide relief to patient who needs immediate and complete attention and care, which can be better done at dedicated single specialty hospitals."
Prof. V Shantha, Director, Cancer Institute, Chennai, who has been at the helm of affairs at this govt. cancer centre for last 59 years and is an epitome of philanthropy and social service in medical care in India said, "I'm into social service and may not be best suited to this occasion but I felt a need to be here as Cancer, Diabetes and Cardio-vascular diseases all are non-communicable diseases and have two basic things in common- one is that all non-communicable diseases are related to lifestyle changes and second to the genetic factor and are growing at an alarming pace. More we do in this regard is less and so such dedicated centres are more needed all over the country." She also pressed for the 'need to dedicate some part of services to the underprivileged and deprived section of the society.'
Dr GSK Velu, Chairman, Medfort Hospitals declared that, "Medfort shall start in at Chennai with this state-of-the-art centre of excellence as hub and 3-4 spoke centres in Chennai city and then build on a national network by setting up similar centres of excellence across the country in New Delhi (North), Mumbai (West) and Kolkota (East) and other South Indian cities, which shall be supported independently by spoke centres. By end of 2012, Medfort shall aspire to become Asia's largest single specialty Diabetes and Endocrine centre supported by a chain of eye care hospitals- Medfort Sharp Centres all over."
