India Consults Over Proposal to Strengthen Food Contact Regulations
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in India is currently consulting over a proposal to expand the number of substances in food contact plastic subject to a specific migration limit.
- (1888PressRelease) October 14, 2021 - The proposal was issue in a notification on September 6, 2021, and the ministry will be accepting comments until November 5, 2021. If accepted, the draft – Food Safety and Standards (Packaging) Amendment Regulations, 2021 – will amend Food Safety and Standards (Packaging) Regulations, 2018. The proposed amendment adda antimony and bis 2-(ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) to the list of regulated substances – increasing the total number from seven to nine.
The proposal would update to Regulation 4, Sub-regulation (4) Table 1 ‘Requirements for specific migration limits of substances from plastic materials intended to be in contact with articles of food’ to include:
1. Barium: ≤ 1.0 mg/kg
2. Cobalt: ≤ 0.05 mg/kg
3. Copper: ≤ 5.0 mg/kg
4. Iron: ≤ 48.0 mg/kg
5. Lithium: ≤ 0.6 mg/kg
6. Manganese: ≤ 0.6 mg/kg
7. Zinc: ≤ 25.0 mg/kg
8. Antimony: ≤ 0.04 mg/kg
9. DEHP: ≤ 1.5 mg/kg
