India has the world's fifth-largest electricity generation capacity which currently stands at 245 GW. The power sector in India is highly diverse with varied commercial sources for power generation like coal, natural gas, hydro, oil and nuclear as well as unconventional sources of energy like solar, wind, bio-gas and agriculture. The demand for power has been growing at a rapid rate and overtaken the supply, leading to power shortages in spite of manifold growth in power generation over the years.
India's energy deficit has come down from 7761 MU in December 2012 to 2762 MU in December 2014. As of December 2014, the total demand for energy in India was 86860 MU against the supply of 84098 MU resulting in a deficit of 3.18%.
Focused efforts have been initiated to bridge this demand-supply gap by way of policy reforms, participation from private sector, development of the Ultra Mega Power Projects (UMPP) and promotion of energy conservation technologies and energy efficient equipment. The energy efficiency sector offers tremendous opportunities for investing companies due to the huge size of the market and growth potential.
India has a huge potential for energy conservation. As per a 2011 study by Planning Commission of India, the energy saving potential from usage of energy efficient (EE) equipment is in the range of 124 to 255 billion kWh.
The need of the hour is to increase focus on in-country R&D activities to develop various innovative and cost effective energy conservation technologies which can reduce or replace inefficient equipment in industrial, agricultural and domestic sectors. Also the awareness levels of end users be it industries or common citizens needs to be increased about the benefits derived from the usage of energy efficient equipment.
The aim of this report is to provide a snapshot of energy conservation/efficiency market in India which can be used by all stakeholders. This report highlights the need of energy conservation market in India, its growth drivers and inhibitors, EXIM scenario, related policies and various risks associated with the sector. This report also provides analysis models like PEST Analysis, Porter's Five Forces Analysis and SWOT Analysis for the sector apart from providing recommendations for end users, manufacturers and policy makers.
