San Diego, CA (1888PressRelease) October 04, 2017 - The Summit and its Importance - The U.S.-Brazil Binational Innovation Summit was a joint collaboration between the U.S. Council on Competitiveness, the National Confederation of Industry in Brazil, and the University of California San Diego (UC San Diego). The Summit included over 100 attendees with the bulk requiring interpreting services during the conference and networking luncheon.

The purpose of the U.S.-Brazil Innovation Summit is to unite corporate, academic, and government innovation leaders to strengthen Brazil-U.S. collaborations. The Summit focused on entrepreneurship and investment opportunities across the United States and Brazil and the tools and strategies to drive long-term productivity within these two countries.

In 2015, the Council on Competitiveness signed a memorandum of understanding with the Financiadora de Estudos e Projetos (FINEP), Brazil’s premier innovation agency, to enhance U.S.-Brazil innovation. The U.S.-Brazil Binational Innovation Platform was established to provide a new engagement pathway for the U.S. and Brazil to achieve their shared goals in the areas of knowledge creation, education, and innovation among others. In a Council on Competitiveness press release posted on their website, Deborah L. Wince-Smith, President & CEO of the Council on Competitiveness had this to say about the partnership, “The signing of this agreement marks a landmark moment in a nearly 10-year-old innovation journey for the U.S. and Brazil. FINEP is a tremendous partner that shares in the Council’s goals of supporting innovation through the development of new research, collaborations, and understanding.”

This year’s Summit was held at the beautiful Scripps Seaside Forum in San Diego, California. As the Summit’s host, UC San Diego worked to provide event planning as well as professional interpreters for the multilingual event. The U.S.-Brazil Innovation Summit included c-level executive participants from both the U.S. and Brazil. As such, Imani Lee, Inc. needed to provide interpreting services for English and Brazilian Portuguese. Based on the nature of the summit, Imani Lee, Inc. concluded simultaneous interpretation was necessary.

Simultaneous interpretation, usually considered the most difficult type of interpretation, involves situations where an interpreter is working simultaneously to both comprehend and interpret the spoken language as quickly as possible. This requires the interpreter listen to a speaker’s words, comprehend those words, mentally ‘translate’ the speaker’s words, and then communicate the speaker’s words in the target language at the same level of fluency. This process is difficult enough as it is, but as the Imani Lee, Inc. Onsite Program Manager Raid Behnam explains, this can get even more complicated, “Speakers at a conference do not pause so you can’t pause either. If you lose focus for just a few seconds, you will miss parts of sentences and the discourse becomes disjointed. Besides accuracy, you have to consider tone, intonation, and collocations, most of which may sound “right” to native English speakers, but may be confusing to non-English speakers from other countries and cultures.” There are conferences where contributors and audience members need to share a common language in order to understand and interact with each other. Imani Lee’s Portuguese interpreters helped to bridge this language divide to increase collaboration between participants from both countries, which, as EVP for the Council on Competitiveness Chad Evans explains, is crucial to innovation, “The future of #innovation will come from bridging divides & building connections.
