IIFT enlightens executives about Corporate Social Responsibility
IIFT, Indian Institute of Foreign Trade organized the fourth, two day Corporate Sustainability & Responsibility program jointly with BCF, Business & Community Foundation at their campus recently. IIFT and BCF have been holding the program since 2008. So far over 100 participants from Private sector, Public sector and academics have undergone this capacity building program.
- (1888PressRelease) April 27, 2011 - Designed as an interactive course, the main focus of the program has been on developing the knowledge base of the participants in the areas of Sustainability and CR so as to enable them to integrate it with the business strategy of their organizations. The program content included Case Studies and Benchmarking Studies which were presented by the concerned organizations. The program has been appreciated by all the participants over the years.
The program was inaugurated by Mr.Manoj Arora, Director Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs. The valedictory session was an interactive session between Mr.Bhaskar Chatterjee, Secretary, Dept. of Public Enterprises and the participants. In his concluding remarks Mr. Chatterjee drove home the point about the "difference between charity and CSR. Both Public and Private Sector organizations owe it to the society." He also stressed that "CR as an activity should be well thought out as a business strategy that has to be sustainable. It should be implemented after adequate need assessment and benchmarking studies. The efficacy and efficiency of CSR (of the organization) can be measured only after external validation by an independent agency. He once again highlighted that "organizations should contribute 2% of their turnover towards CSR".
Amongst the other eminent speakers Mark Runacres, India Adviser, Confederation of British Industry spoke on Global Compact, a strategic policy initiative for businesses that are committed to aligning their operations and strategies with ten universally accepted principles in the areas of human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption.
Speaking on the occasion Mr.K.T.Chacko, Director IIFT said "This initiative from IIFT & BCF is quite significant to develop the knowledge base and skills of professionals who would play an important role in envisioning, planning & implementation of corporate responsibility in their organizations in a globalized world". Mr Ravishankar, Chairperson (MDPs) IIFT, and Ms Amita Joseph, Director BCF, also spoke on this occasion. The feedback shared by the participants in the concluding session was a real testimony to the efficacy and usefulness of the program. There were requests from participants that IIFT and BCF should hold such programs twice a year to enable more participation.
