- (1888PressRelease) January 21, 2012 - Mumbai - In an ongoing effort to make roads safer in India, Institute for Excellence in Services and Planning (IESP), a training arm of Airawat group, partners with Mumbai Traffic Police and other corporate organizations to impart essential skills to drivers with Defensive Driving Course (DDC) Training module, a first of its kind initiative in India. Aimed at reducing the road accidents in the country, the institute has successfully trained over 4000 drivers till date.
IESP's autonomous Defensive Driving Course specializes two arenas viz. training courses specifically for Airport Driving permit (ADP) and training for General Road Safety. In the arena of road safety, IESP has imparted training to more than 300 staff of the Mumbai Police Traffic over a course of 5 sessions. IESP has also trained more than 3000 professionals for an Airport Driving Permit (ADP) from organizations like Cambata Aviation Pvt. Ltd., Go Air, Kingfisher Airlines, Mumbai International Airport Ltd. amongst others.
IESP customizes training programs according to the need of the organization and the type of vehicle driven. The training is a one-day classroom session, which uses the latest audio visual aids to reinforce defensive driving. The training module emphasizes on driving defensively, making safe choices, becoming aware of conditions and honing driving skills and techniques. The DDC training ensures higher success rate in reducing the number and severity of accidents and their related costs.
"Even the very best driver can goof up at times and end up in a tragedy. Taking your eyes off the highway, even for a split second, to attend your mobile phone or to check that billboard on the freeway could make you vulnerable to an accident. Surprisingly, we do not appear to understand the importance of taking precautions while driving even after knowing the seriousness of the matter. That is where defensive driving comes into picture and makes you understand the significance of the issue", says Mr. A.S. Khanna, MD, Airawat Group, a certified instructor for DDC, accredited by the National Safety Council, USA, leads the DDC Training and guides implementation of the programs.
Road accident is one of the top nine reasons for deaths in the country. Thirteen people die every hour in road accidents in the country. Maharashtra has the worst accident rate in the country with 212 accidents and 24 deaths every day. In the first six months of 2011, Kerala saw 2,119 accident deaths.
In addition, the institute is currently training drivers from Force Motors Ltd., IESP's flagship venture into DDC Training with private organizations. "Our contract with Force Motors commenced in November 2011 and we have successfully completed two sessions of the training program," adds Mr. A.S. Khanna.
"The training conducted on 'Skill on Defensive Driving' by IESP has effectively explained various road conditions that are prone to cause accidents and ways in which they can be avoided. It has benefited us immensely in improving our driving skills and stressed upon the importance of having right temperament while driving", comments one of the participants from Force Motors Ltd undergone the DDC training program.
Institute for Excellence in Services and Planning (IESP) plans to train over 2000 professionals from Public Sector organizations and 9000 professionals from private corporate enterprises in the next 8 to 12 months.
Road Safety Scenario in India
With 1,30,000 deaths annually, India has overtaken China and now has the worst road traffic accident rate worldwide reveals the World Health Organization (WHO) in its first ever-Global Status Report on Road Safety.
Road safety is an intricate issue of national apprehension. With rising motorization at 10% compound growth every year and expanding road network, travel risks and traffic exposure are growing at a much faster rate. Government statistics have pegged the cost to the economy at a staggering Rs 4,000 Crore due to road accidents. Thus, the need for road safety has become imperative in our country.
With the increase in traffic on road nowadays, the safety of travelers on the road has become a big issue. The reason for this increase in traffic is that a large numbers of drivers in India today are able to walk away with licenses without getting a proper training. As a result these untrained drivers, drive their vehicles carelessly beyond the speed limit resulting in accidents. Truck and school bus drivers holding bogus licenses also cause menace and accidents involving children occur when they are playing or travelling by school bus. Road accidents not only cause grief to the families affected but also hamper our national economy.
