  • (1888PressRelease) December 16, 2017 - The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) has published Amendment 1 to IEC 60598-1: 2014 – Luminaires - Part 1: General requirements and tests. Issued on September 15, 2017, the amendment introduces new markings and changes some construction requirements and electrical tests.

The amendment introduces several beneficial changes for manufacturers. These include:
    • The addition of ten definitions – most relating to luminaires which use lamp control gear or an LED lighting source
    • Changes to the section on marking, including:
o Rated input constant voltage, Rated input constant current and value of Uout, Rated input power. These relate to LED luminaires and luminaires designed for non-replaceable or non-user replaceable light sources
o Marking for leads and terminations used for the connection to extra low voltage d.c. supplies
o The warning symbol “Do not stare at the operating light source”, shall be visible as detailed by condition ‘a’ of Clause 3.2 and Table 3.1. In the old standard, this marking needed to be visible as detailed by conditions ‘a’ and ‘c’ of Sub clause 3.2 and Table 3.1. Meaning, the manufacturer only need attach this label in one position in the luminaire, not two positions or one position that meets both conditions
o Luminaires delivered without control gear shall be provided with the necessary information for the selection of the appropriate component
o Additional information should be put on the packaging when the terminal block is not supplied with the luminaire
    • Changes to construction requirements relating to the rule for Test E for clip-mounted luminaires. Under the old standard, this test was difficult for clip-mounted luminaires to pass because it required the clip not to move on the glass at a pull of 20N. Following Amendment 1, the requirement has changed to state that the clip must not fall off the glass at a pull of 20 N. This allows clip-mounted luminaires to pass more easily

Less beneficial to manufacturers is the new requirement that, if the luminaire uses internal wires with a reduced cross-sectional area, various important tests must be conducted. The current limit rating of the protection device shall be taken as the proven characteristic of the device used. It has also made changes to the standard framework requirements for creepage distances and clearances.

Finally, in the electrical tests section, the major changes are:
    • Addition of the IPX2 test method, which will allow luminaires to be marked with an IPX2 rating
    • Changes to endurance and thermal tests
    • Clarification of test conditions for luminaires with constant voltage or constant current operations not equipped with control gear

These changes relate only to the IEC standard and manufacturers will want to wait for the amendment to EN 60598-1, to see how this will deliver real benefits for manufacturers wanting to import the luminaires to European market.

Stakeholders are now advised to check their products conform to the latest requirements for importing luminaires to Europe.
