Ice Bucket Challenge for ALS
ALS Ice Bucket challenge is an act of pouring ice cold bucket of water on one's head and then passing on the challenge to someone else. If you are unable to complete the challenge within 24 hours you donate $100 to the ALS Association.
- (1888PressRelease) August 27, 2014 - Needless to say that people are doing both. The Ice Bucket Challenge to raise awareness for ALS also known as Lou Gehrig disease is a raging phenomena now a days on social media. The challenge has now slowly but gradually reached the Indian shores and with more and more celebrities taking up the challenge everyday it is catching up very fast.
Ice Bucket Challenge has opened new frontiers and showed new dimensions in system of fundraising and raising awareness. Though some people may discard it as a gimmick but I side with those who see the Ice Bucket Challenge as a marker of something larger spread across cultures.
Ice Bucket challenge is very easy to take. Firstly we need to be challenged by someone and then a mix of all these ingredients - a bucket, Ice, a smart phone, a change of clothes and of course Bravery!! After all these ingredients are collected we need to do the act of simply dousing oneself with icy cold water, click your picture, post it on social media and Bingo you are the Ice Bucket challenge survivor. In case you cannot complete the task you have to contribute 100$ to charity. And then nominate other people to do similar act.
Now since we know about Ice Bucket Challenge, it is important to understand that what exactly is ALS and the struggles associated with it, rather than just dumping the ice water on our head and then donating!
ALS or Amyotrophic lateral Sclerosis is a progressive disorder, which literally means weakened muscles(Amyotrophic) in the lateral portion of the spinal cord due to progressive damage of motor neurons (Sclerosis).
In layman language ALS occurs when nerve cells in the brain die and so the brain is unable to communicate to the muscles through the spinal cord. The symptoms include loss of muscle tone. ALS is a rapidly progressing disease and patients incur problems with moving, swallowing, speaking. In the advance stages, even breathing independence is lost and the patient has to go on ventilator support. The life span of an ALS patient is usually 5-10 years after being detected of the disease. Though with the usage of Adult stem cells it is now possible to stop or slow down the progression of the disease thereby increasing life span of such patients.
The challenge has raised more than 40 Million US Dollars till now for ALS research but Unfortunately the co founder of the challenge Corey Griffin died last week in a freak accident before he could see the magnitude of this simple act is going to make on ALS research.
We as Advancells have been in forefront of not just creating awareness for such diseases but also providing viable solutions for management and reversal of the disease using patient's own Stem Cells and it was quite natural thus to be challenged from one of our ex patients Ashraf Hussain. We accept the challenge with an oath to recommit ourselves towards trying and reaching our to more and more patients suffering from such neurological disorders and helping them in finding a cure for their efforts.
