The football tradition is a century old in Kolhapur. The great King Chhatrapati Shahaji, the grandson of Rajashri Shahu Maharaja who had come to Kolhapur for higher education had immense love with the sport. Since then, taking inspiration from the kings, people of Kolhapur have been playing football. Although wrestling is the traditional sport of Kolhapur, football is the favorite of its people. In 1910, Jamdar Football club was established in Kolhapur and it was one of the earliest football clubs formed. Football tournaments go on during all the seasons of the year and attract a huge number of football lovers from various places in and around Kolhapur. However, it is extremely sad that although with so many football fanatics in the city, none of them have been selected on a national level.
