IAIRA Fights For Performers Rights To Receive Fair Pay
The International Association of Independent Recording Artists weighs in on the fight to help performers receive fair pay for air play.
- Nashville, TN (1888PressRelease) August 26, 2010 - The International Association of Independent Recording Artists announced today its intent to join in the effort to obtain fair payment for performers whose songs are played over the air waves. Under the current system only the song writer receives a small royalty for air play. The Performance Right Act (H.R. 848) looks to change all that.
The Performance Right Act grants performers of sound recordings equal rights to compensation from terrestrial broadcasters. At first glance this seems like a fair and simple thing but The National Association of Broadcasters has lobbied for decades to block similar legislation from passing. In 2009 alone they spent an estimated 11.1 million dollars in lobbying efforts.
The Performance Right Act (H.R. 848) has bi-partisan backing as well as support from the Obama administration. For the first time performers may be in a position to finally get paid for their work by terrestrial broadcasters.
Chief Operating Officer for IAIRA Mark Carman stated that "now is the right time for IAIRA to get involved. Never before have we been so close to getting artists fair pay for their work from radio broadcasters. IAIRA is encouraging all of its members to call and write their representatives in support of H.R. 848. We also encourage them to support other leaders in this fight such as musicFIRST. Their work on this issue has been tireless."
