Houston Orthodontist Promotes National Children's Dental Health Month

Yet according to the ADA (American Dental Association) 16 million American children suffer from tooth decay, which is 16 million too many. Each February, the ADA sponsors National Children's Dental Health Month to highlight the need for better dental education and to provide free or reduced cost dental care to children from underserved communities across America. An estimated 450,000 children are expected to receive free or low cost dental care from the nearly 1600 participating Give Kids a Smile sites nationwide. The ADA reports that state Medicaid budgets allot 2% or less to dental care, yet children are twice as likely to be without dental insurance as without health insurance. National Children's Dental Health Month is important because it helps to reach those children and teens who would otherwise be without access to the dental care they need to have healthy teeth.
According to ADA president Dr. William R. Calnon, "The ADA reminds parents and caregivers about the importance of good oral hygiene habits not only in February, but all year long,". The old saying that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure could not be more true when it comes to good oral hygiene. The ADA, along with dental health professionals like Houston orthodontist Dr. Davoody, wants to educate families on how to take better care of their teeth. The recommendations are simple: brush two times a day with a fluoride toothpaste, floss every day, choose healthy foods, and see your dentist regularly.
