  • (1888PressRelease) August 23, 2011 - Aspiring home stagers often lack confidence about their skills and wonder whether they have enough creativity to deliver successful home staging solutions to their clients. But home staging expert Debra Gould counsels stagers not to be afraid of failure.

"When it comes to staging a home, you have to be willing to look at things in different ways and see what works," explains Gould. "Some ideas will fail, though these aren't really failures, because everything you try gets you closer to the 'right' answer."

Gould, who founded the Staging Diva Home Staging Business Training Program, emphasizes how subjective creativity is: "If you paraded 10 home stagers through a room, chances are that each one would do something slightly different. While most will notice there is too much (or too little) furniture, or that there is currently no focal point, they will each bring their own creativity and ideas to the situation. In other words, there is no single 'right' answer to a particular staging dilemma."

Gould recently wrote a blog article called, "Home Stagers - What Would You Do in These 4 Rooms?" In it she shared some typical "before" shots from her various home staging projects and asked home stagers to test their own staging ideas in four different rooms. Gould recommends this article as an excellent source of home staging tips, since many readers have provided their own solutions to the typical home staging problems presented.

According to Gould, the more creative solutions (and the most exciting results), come from not being afraid to fail. "When I'm choosing colors for a client who isn't moving, I'll often come up with two decidedly different looks," says Gould. "The first choice will be easy to live with, but the second alternative is typically much more daring. There's a risk that the client will hate it when the room is painted, but there's also a big chance that the client will love it. The 'wow' results come from pushing your limits and trying something more daring."

Gould believes this is also true of life. "We have the option of staying on the safe and expected path and never rocking the boat by doing anything surprising or adventurous. We might be totally bored, but at least we won't fail. In my mind, never stepping out of our comfort zone to learn or try something new, IS a huge failure! To be bored is to die a slow death as far as I'm concerned."
