  • Milwaukee-Waukesha, WI (1888PressRelease) September 15, 2009 - If your heart stops beating on top of a mountain, your chances of survival aren’t very good. Lucky for Holy Hill-area potter Lee Curtes, an automatic external defibrillator (AED) was installed on top of a mountain in Vail, Colorado, nearly ten years ago – making his “impossible” helicopter rescue, possible.

“I’m celebrating ten years of my second chance at life,” says Curtes, whose pottery show is being held this weekend, around the corner from the well-attended 35th Annual Holy Hill Arts & Crafts Fair. “And I want to give others the same chance by supporting Project ADAM.”

A portion of the proceeds from the Lee Curtes Pottery sale this weekend will be donated to Project ADAM (Automated Defibrillators in Adam’s Memory), a non-profit program of Herma Heart Center at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. The mission of the program is to serve children and adolescents through education and deployment of life-saving programs that help prevent sudden cardiac arrest.

Curtes, who studied in college under renowned ceramicist, the late Dr. Paul Donhauser, returned to potting after his heart attack and subsequent retirement from the business world. “It’s therapeutic for me,” says Curtes, who was known in business for his creativity. “And it has brought my family and friends together in a way I never dreamed it could.”

Curtes is hoping that some of the people flocking to the Holy Hill Arts & Crafts Fair, which projects attendance between 7,000 and 10,000, will stop in to visit his studio, which is located less than a mile from Holy Hill.

Lee Curtes Pottery will be open to the public this Saturday, September 19, 2009, from 10:00 AM until 4:00 PM. The studio is located at 5899 Shannon Road, Hartford, Wisconsin 53027, and will be well-marked with directional signs.

About Lee Curtes Pottery: Lee’s work is inspired by the natural beauty around the artist’s Holy Hill-area home studio. He creates many different types of functional and decorative one-of-a-kind pottery, including coffee mugs, various sized bowls, pitchers, planters, platters, plates, vases and large handmade vessels. The clay is high-fire stoneware and is thrown on a wheel. The glazes and clay body are fired to a temperature of 2,300 degrees Fahrenheit in a hand built, gas-fired kiln. The nature of a gas-fired kiln ensures that each and every piece is unique and one-of-a-kind. The pottery is nontoxic and is oven-, microwave- and dishwasher-safe. Custom orders are welcome.
