Hokuleas Global Voyage Celebrates Old Navigation Techniques

- (1888PressRelease) August 06, 2014 - A worldwide voyage has set sail featuring Hōkūle'a, a replica of a storied Polynesian double-hulled voyaging canoe that embodies ancient navigation methods.
Hōkūle'a has recently arrived in Tahiti together with its sister vessel Hikianalia, marking the second leg of its great voyage: a circumnavigation of the earth covering 47,000 nautical miles, with stops at 85 ports in 26 different countries.
Estimated to last for five years, the voyage is led by the Polynesian Voyaging Society, which committed to depend entirely on traditional Polynesian navigation techniques. A crew of 300 is aboard the voyaging canoe.
'Dubbed 'wayfinding,' the technique means relying on a keen sense of the elements and the natural environment, such as the wind, the movement of wildlife species, the flight of birds, the clustering of the clouds, the speed, direction, and size of ocean waves, and the position of stars, to serve as guide.
The journey, which began in 2013 in Oahu, has since been named "Malama Honua" or caring for the earth, to celebrate the idea of stewardship or being one with nature. This way, the Polynesian Voyaging Society hopes to advocate a sustainable way of living, one that is in tune with the planet's ways, while also promoting global relationships.
The Polynesian Voyaging Society was founded in 1973 to test the theory that the first settlers of Hawaii used organized 'wayfinding' methods as they sailed from the Marquesas Islands in French Polynesia. They built Hōkūle'a, and successfully navigated the Pacific Ocean from Hawaiʻi to Tahiti in 1976.
Harold Clarke, owner of Windermere/C and H Properties and founder of LuxuryBigIsland.com, talks about the voyage with pride: "This worldwide voyage is a showcase of the rich history in the region, tracing back to hundreds of years ago.
