History of Zellwood Honored in New Book
Six co-authors, all part of Zellwood Historical Society, Museum, and Library, Inc., combined forces to bring their intimate knowledge of Zellwood to create Images of America Zellwood.
- Orlando, FL (1888PressRelease) November 04, 2014 - New from Arcadia Publishing's Images of America series is Zellwood, a collaboration of six authors from the Zellwood Historical Society, Museum and Library. The book is comprised of over 200 vintage images that together tell the story of this small Florida town.
Named for Lt. Col. Thomas Ellwood Zell, who started spending winters in the area in 1876, lured other former Civil War officers with newspaper clippings. They soon settled near Lakes Maggiore and Minore attracting more people who built new homes, boarding houses and estates. "Our book pays tribute to some of the area's movers and shakers, its historic edifices (both humble and grand), and institutions such as churches and schools," said the Historical Society.
Dominating agriculture from the 1940's through the late 1990's, Zellwood produced sweet corn and other vegetables. These vegetables farmed on the muck land caused Orange County's vegetable production to rank fifth in Florida and twenty-first in the nation in 1969. The town was not without hard times and churches and schools came together to create a close knit community that has kept its history alive. "within these pages, we share images intended to provide a peek back in time-and possibly to reveal a few surprises," said the Historical Society. "No soul remembered is ever really gone or forgotten."
