- (1888PressRelease) September 16, 2010 - Rockville, MD - History Associates is pleased to announce that the business history of Cleco Corporation, Lighting Louisiana for 75 Years, has recently been published. Written by Dr. Kenneth D. Durr, executive vice president at historical research firm History Associates, it tells the story of how a local ice company in Bunkie, Louisiana, evolved into a regional utility company with a state-of-the-art power plant that can run on renewable energy.
Cleco Corporation publishes its company history in celebration of its 75th anniversary.
"Cleco's story is one of smart planning in the face of constant challenge," said Dr. Durr. "The company has persevered through the growing pains of the post World War II era, the energy crisis of the '70s, and the turmoil of electric utility deregulation." Dr. Durr noted how the vision of its early leaders set the stage for its successful position today. "A persistent theme to Cleco's success since its incorporation as Louisiana Ice and Electric in 1935 is its commitment to becoming a self-sufficient energy company," he said, adding that Cleco's Madison 3 power plant (originally called Rodemacher Unit 3) has given Cleco the capacity and fuel flexibility to provide power to its customers for the next thirty years or more.
Dr. Durr and his team of historical researchers at History Associates searched the archives at Cleco's Pineville, Louisiana, headquarters and did local and national archival research to uncover historical facts and images that would bring the story to life. An accomplished business, labor, and political historian, Dr. Durr conducted oral history interviews with nearly a dozen former Cleco employees and other key figures to weave their recollections into the narrative.
"History Associates weaved little-known facts with major milestone events to create an entertaining and meaningful story of Cleco's history," noted Susan Broussard, manager of Corporate and Strategic Communications at Cleco. "Their research was thorough, and they were helpful throughout the process."
Cleco is distributing copies of the published book as part of its ongoing 75th anniversary celebration. An electronic version of the history is also viewable at http://www.cleco.com/timeline75/index.html.
